More importantly, it was uniting against oppression and tyranny, which was PAS's stance.Anwar is facing the possible end of his political career when the Federal Court on February 10 delivers its verdict on his appeal against a conviction of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.Khalid today reminded party members and supporters that they need to look at the bigger picture behind the case: that it was politically motivated.“Agree or disagree, like it or not, when the government uses its power to act against an individual, then it is cruel and oppressive.“This is about justice and principle," he said.He added that on February 10, Putrajaya too would be on trial as people would want to see how transparent the judiciary was.On the spat between PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali and his DAP counterpart Lim Guan Eng, Khalid said he was willing to be the middle man for both leaders if they wanted to meet."Both of them are my old friends. I respect both of them. If they need a third party, I am ever willing to play the role... No need for an open debate. They can settle the issue personally." he said.On January 28, Mustafa challenged Lim to a debate on local council elections as he was accused by Lim of being dishonest about the Islamist party’s decision not to back the idea.Meanwhile, it was reported that Penang PKR is mobilising at least 20,000 supporters from the state to rally outside the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya this Tuesday to support Anwar.State PKR communication and new media director Farid Arshad said the verdict was relevant to all Malaysians as it dealt with, among others, the freedom of expression and basic human rights.Ahead of the verdict, PKR is already organising "Jelajah Rakyat Hakim Negara" (The people are the judge) roadshows around the country for Anwar to address supporters at rallies, or ceramah.Anwar is looking at a jail term of five years – the sentence passed by the Court of Appeal which overturned his acquittal by the High Court.Anwar could also lose his Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat if his conviction is upheld. – February 5, 2015.

Pemberhentian kerja 52 petugas Astro Productions Sdn Bhd (APSB) baru-baru ini adalah perlu untuk memastikan struktur optimum bagi daya maju perkhidmatan produksi."Semua proses dipatuhi dan semua kakitangan terlibat telah diberi pampasan dan diberi pengiktirafan atas tahun perkhidmatan mereka," kata Naib Presiden Kanan Penyiaran dan Operasi APSB, Rohaizad Mohamed dalam e-mel kepada Bernama semalam.Beliau berkata APSB komited untuk menyediakan kepada pekerja yang terlibat sokongan bagi kerjaya peralihan.APSB dilaporkan telah memberi notis 24 jam dengan tiga bulan gaji sebagai pampasan bagi kakitangan yang terlibat pada 30 Jan lepas.Menurut seorang anggota Kesatuan APSB, yang tidak mahu namanya disiarkan, tindakan syarikat adalah selaras di bawah prasyarat Jabatan Perhubungan Perusahaan Kementerian Sumber Manusia kerana kakitangan terlibat telah diberi notis dan pampasan yang adil.Bekas pekerja APSB, Abdul Halim Manan, 44, berkata pampasan yang ditawarkan kepadanya adalah wajar kerana dia telah berkhidmat selama 18 tahun dengan syarikat.Bagaimanapun, bukan mudah bagi pembantu pengarah pencahayaan untuk mendapat pekerjaan yang baharu lebih-lebih lagi, dia perlu menyara isteri dan empat orang anak.Seorang lagi pekerja yang hanya mahu dikenali sebagai Marry, 42, berkata, dia masih terkejut dengan perkembangan itu dan tidak dapat membayangkan bagaimana keluarganya akan menyambut Tahun Baharu Cina nanti."Ia adalah sukar bagi saya untuk menyatakannya kerana semuanya berlaku secara tiba-tiba," kata beliau.Sementara itu, Presiden Majlis Perhubungan Rangkaian Kesatuan Sekerja Antarabangsa Malaysia (UNI-MLC), Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, dalam satu kenyataan, berkata pihak kesatuan menerima aduan dan semua kesatuan dalam APSB sedang membincangkan perkara itu dengan Jabatan Perhubungan Perusahaan dalam usaha mencari penyelesaian.-Bernama

Human rights lawyer Eric Paulsen was today charged with sedition over his Twitter post allegedly criticising the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim). – The Malaysian Insider pic by Seth Akmal, February 5, 2015.Human rights lawyer Eric Paulsen was today charged with sedition over his Twitter post which allegedly criticised the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) for spreading extremism via Friday sermons.Paulsen, who is executive director of civil society movement Lawyers for Liberty, posted the remark on January 9.He was arrested by police the following night, with Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar tweeting about the lawyer's arrest.Paulsen pleaded not guilty at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to the charge under Section 4(1)(c) of the colonial era law.In an immediate reaction, Phil Robertson, Human Rights Watch deputy director for Asia, said there appeared to be no limits to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's pursuit of critics of his government, given that almost any utterance could be twisted into a violation of the vague terms under the Sedition Act."By proceeding to charge Eric Paulsen with sedition for a single tweet, the Malaysian government is again demonstrating the depths of its outrageous crackdown on free speech and its willingness to attack human rights activists to try and silence them."Instead of prosecuting lawyers like him, the government should be asking for their help to bring Malaysia's antiquated laws into line with international human rights standards, starting with dumping the rights-abusing Sedition Act," he said in a statement.Following Paulsen's tweet, Umno Youth made a report against the lawyer at the Putrajaya district police headquarters.Paulsen had also lodged a police report after receiving death threats from netizens over his tweet on Jakim.He said he had not meant to insult Islam."I have never referred to the religion of Islam in my tweet, I only criticised Jakim as an agency under the Prime Minister's Department," he said.Paulsen also said he was surprised to have been accused of criticising Islam because of the post.He took down the tweet following backlash.Lawyer and Padang Serai MP N. Surendran and Universiti Malaya law professor Dr Azmi Sharom are among several people, including opposition leaders, a journalist, activists and two ulama, who have been hauled up in Putrajaya’s sedition dragnet over the last year.Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad (PAS), Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer (DAP), Seputeh MP Teresa Kok (DAP) and Batu MP Tian Chua have also been charged with sedition.
Lawyer Gobind Singh (pic. right), representing Paulsen, asked the court to fix a later mention date as the Federal Court is set to hear Azmi's challenge on the constitutionality of the Sedition Act on March 24.Judge Zanol Rashid Hussain allowed the request and fixed April 27 for mention.He also set bail at RM2,000 with one surety.Outside the court, Gobind told reporters that if Azmi succeeded in the Federal Court, the charge against Paulsen could not stand.He added that given the challenge mounted against the Sedition Act, the A-G should have held back from prosecuting more people under the colonial era law."But he saw it fit to charge Eric."We will fight the charge to the best of our ability," he said.DPP Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin appeared for the prosecution. – February 5, 2015.

It is now believed that the militants killed him.(Photo: Lockheed Martin)The fight against the Islamic State group is down one key ally for now: the United Arab Emirates.Officials said Tuesday that the UAE suspended its airstrike efforts in December after Jordanian fighter pilot Lt. Moaz al-Kasasbeh was captured by Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL) militants, according to The New York Times.Jordan executed two prisoners on Wednesday hours after a video surfaced showing ISIL militants burning Kasabeh alive in a cage.But before pilots start worrying about allied pilots leaving the fight, the U.S. needs to lay the groundwork for a more direct plan to defeat the threat, said retired Air Force Lt. Col. Scott Lysford."We need to have a very dedicated and coherent strategy and worry about our coalition partners after that," said Lysford, who flew F-16s for more than 10 years in the Middle East."Certainly our hearts go out to that Jordanian pilot as being a brother in arms, but if you think that any of our fighter pilots who watched what happened to the Jordanian pilot are concerned about ISIS doing that to us, there's a zero chance that that's an issue," he said."This is the inherent risk that each young man or woman accepts when they volunteer to serve their country," said retired Air Force Lt. Col. Daren Sorenson. "This act by ISIS will only strengthen their resolve to fly, fight and win this vital war against extremism and they will do everything in their power to support our coalition's strategy objectives," the former F-15E fighter pilot said.Talking on behalf of the "fraternity of pilots" in the U.S., Lysford said U.S. pilots are better equipped when it comes to flying combat missions. While it doesn't help when coalition partners back out, he said, in reality, the influence remains at the helm of the U.S.But others disagree.UAE — one of four Arab nations participating in the coalition bombings since September — had some of the best assets and skill sets in the field, said a former Air Force commander and pilot who served numerous times in UAE."They were the first to have the F-16 Block 60, which was far and away more advanced than anything the U.S. had at the time on the F-16 side," said the commander, speaking on background. UAE's Block 60s — acquired in 2007 — gave pilots improved radar capabilities that could in tandem track and destroy both land and air targets."[These pilots] were probably predominant in the Middle East," the commander said.Around the same time, UAE upgraded dozens of its Mirage 2000-9 fighter jets, enhancing their role in the sky.The commander said the Gulf Air Warfare Center, a facility at Al Dhafra Air Base established in early 2000, also gave UAE pilots the advanced training they needed to work with U.S. pilots in Red Flag-type exercises."In terms of individual competence and as an air force, they were probably far more integrated with coalitions," he said.With Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain still in the fight, UAE said it would rejoin coalition efforts if the Pentagon improves its search-and-rescue efforts, the Times said. This includes stationing V-22 Osprey aircraft closer to the battlegrounds in northern Iraq, instead of basing the missions in Kuwait.Citing an unidentified U.S. official, CNN reported Wednesday evening that search-and-rescue assets have already been moved into northern Iraq as part of a "constant rebalancing," not necessarily in response to the UAE's concerns.U.S. Central Command said in an e-mail to Military Times that it had no further information concerning UAE's future decisions."I didn't see that coming," the commander said of UAE's decision to suspend airstrikes."These are complex decisions and must be weighed carefully and deliberately by each nation," Sorenson said. "We must respect their decision to make that determination and support the needs of the coalition partners to the maximum feasible level possible."UAE was one of the first Arab states to sign up to thwart the Islamic State's advancement, and even had F-16 pilot Maj. SPR terima 64 bantahan sempadan semula S'wak
Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR) menerima sebanyak 64 bantahan berhubung syor Kajian Semula Persempadanan Bahagian-bahagian Pilihan Raya bagi negeri Sarawak.Setiausaha SPR Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh dalam satu kenyataan hari ini berkata SPR akan meneliti setiap representasi bantahan sama ada ia memenuhi syarat bagi sesi siasatan tempatan diadakan atau sebaliknya."Sekiranya siasatan tempatan akan diadakan, tarikh dan masa sesi siasatan tempatan akan dimaklumkan melalui surat yang akan dikeluarkan oleh SPR kepada pihak-pihak terlibat," katanya.Menurutnya, bantahan yang diterima sepanjang tempoh sebulan pameran yang berakhir semalam menunjukkan peningkatan ketara berbanding 2005 iaitu sebanyak 26 bantahan.Berdasarkan Jadual ke-13 Perlembagaan Persekutuan, siasatan tempatan akan diadakan oleh SPR bagi mendengar representasi bantahan syor yang diterima daripada kerajaan negeri, pihak berkuasa tempatan atau sekumpulan orang seramai 100 atau lebih yang nama mereka ditunjukkan dalam daftar pemilih semasa bagi bahagian-bahaian pilihan raya berkenaan.-BernamaBoko Haram kills scores of civilians in Cameroon attack

Didier Badjeck.Schools also have been razed by the insurgents, whose nickname, Boko Haram, means "Western education is forbidden" in the Hausa language.Hundreds of insurgents were killed Wednesday compared to the loss of 13 Chadian and 6 Cameroonian troops, Defense Minister Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo said. At least 91 civilians have been killed and most of more than 500 wounded people cannot be immediately taken to the hospitals, he said. There was no way to immediately confirm the account independently.The fighters are believed to have crossed into Cameroon from nearby Gamboru, a Nigerian border town that had been an extremist stronghold since November. Gamboru was retaken earlier this week and the fighters driven out by Chadian and Nigerian air strikes supported by Chadian ground troops.African Union officials on Thursday were finalizing plans for a multinational force to fight the spreading Boko Haram uprising, although there are questions about funding. The AU last week authorized a 7,500-strong force from Nigeria and its four neighbors, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin.Senior officers from the U.N. peacekeeping department are attending the meeting in Yaounde, Cameroon's capital, said a U.N. official.The Africans want U.N. Security Council approval and money to fund the mission, said the official who spoke Wednesday at the United Nations and insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press on the meeting.France's President Francois Hollande said Thursday his country is providing support with weapons, logistics and operations for the multinational effort. At a news conference in Paris, he stopped short of saying whether France is actually involved in military action itself. MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon is under fire for criticising Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob over a Facebook posting calling for a boycott of Chinese businesses. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, February 5, 2015.A total of 165 MCA Youth divisions nationwide threw their support behind their chief Chong Sin Woon after being slammed by Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob for lacking the “Barisan Nasional" spirit following his criticism against the agriculture and agro-based industry minister's Facebook rant against Chinese businesses.The MCA members gathered at the lobby of the Chinese party headquarters in Jalan Ampang and held up banners declaring their support for Chong."The stance taken by Chong is MCA's stand. We the members of MCA Youth stand firmly with him on this."We believe that Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri as a minister had incited racial hatred by labelling Chinese businessmen as 'profiteers' and his words are full of malice and lack common sense," the youth wing secretary-general Datuk Leong Kim Soon said today.Leong said Ismail should apologise to Malaysians. He added that Ismail defending his own 'illogical theory’ only added salt to the wound.
Despite Ismail’s denial, he said the minister was racist.
Ismail said his Facebook remark was merely a general warning to all traders who hiked up prices of goods indiscriminately."I've seen his Facebook posting and he definitely wrote the words 'Cina' (Chinese) and 'Melayu' (Malay). That is racist," he was quoted as saying by the party's website today.Ismail said on Facebook that if the Malays boycotted Chinese businesses, they would have no choice but to lower their prices.He also singled out the OldTown White Coffee chain owned by OldTown Bhd, saying DAP MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham owned shares in the company. Ngeh has denied the allegation.His comments drew flak from the public while MCA, Gerakan and DAP members lodged police reports against him.Chong called for Ismail to be sacked from the Cabinet, prompting the minister to criticise the MCA senator for not having the “Barisan Nasional" spirit and being complicit with DAP on this matter.A total of 92 Umno divisions had also rallied behind Ismail and called for Chong's resignation.The Prime Minister's Department yesterday said in a statement that Ismail comments were meant to rebuke all traders who refused to lower the price of goods despite lower fuel prices, and not just those from a particular race. – February 5, 2015.
