Interfaith work goes on despite PAS bashing, says Mujahid

PAS National Unity Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa says remarks touching on race and the religious sensitivities of other communities remain a challenge but he will continue efforts to reach out to all Malaysians. On the left is Bishop Sebastian Francis at a luncheon hosted by Mujahid. – Pic courtesy of Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, January 28, 2015.PAS National Unity Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, who is well-known for his work in building bridges to bring Muslim and non-Muslim communities together, is not letting anyone stand in his way.Even though his party leaders sometimes made remarks that touched on race and the religious sensitivities of other communities, he said such "challenges" would not hamper his efforts to create unity among all Malaysians."I won't say they will hamper my work. They are just challenges, which will not stand in the way of the greater good. That is a historical fact. If you want to do something big, you need to think and act big."I do face criticism within my party as well, and sometimes they are not based on my work. It is political assassination but that is part of the dynamics of a political party. People who attack others often have their own motives," he told The Malaysian Insider today.Yesterday, Mujahid and several other local PAS grassroots leaders met Christian leaders in Penang for a luncheon. Among those present at the small, informal and closed event was Bishop Sebastian Francis."It was not held for any special reason. I have a good relationship with the bishop and since it is the start of the new year, it was good to get together for lunch and to go deeper into the programmes we want to do," he said.Mujahid said there are plans to do more than just have dialogues with the Christian community, such as going down to the ground to help those in need.He said there are plans for a programme called "Common Word" where both Muslims and Christians, who are people of the Book, could come together and fulfil their social obligations in a humanistic approach."People of different faiths can share common struggles. We can always work on what we have in common, without bringing in religious dogmas."Mujahid is often remembered as the PAS MP who went to churches to have dialogues with Christians and even published a book about it.In Malaysia, it is rare for Muslims to go to churches to speak to Christians, especially with the “Allah" issue that is sensitive among both communities.Other than that, another matter that could now negatively affect Mujahid's efforts is the recent May 13 statement by his party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, who attacked Pakatan Rakyat ally, DAP, over its struggle to bring back local government elections.Hadi remarked last Friday that DAP's insistence on holding local council elections could cause a deeper racial divide as well as tensions, especially in Chinese-majority areas, and that PAS rejected any move that could bring about a repeat of the May 13 racial riots. He reportedly said DAP's push for local government elections was a mistake as it was only advantageous to urban residents, who were mainly non-Malays.Mujahid, who is Penang PAS deputy commissioner and Parit Buntar MP, said he was surprised with Hadi's statement because PAS had never cited the racial riots."The party has always believed May 13 to be an incident used by Umno to create tension. It did not sound like Hadi at all (to use the May 13 incident)," he said.He said he might disagree with local government elections, but he did not see the issue from a racial perspective. He would rather question how the local council polls would be implemented, what infrastructure would be needed to support the elections, and how the public might feel about it."There are many questions to address regarding this issue like whether we can first conduct a pilot project to test it out, elect just half of the councillors first just to try it out... all these require consultation."But how can someone of sound mind just reject a democratic process?" he said, adding that even mosque committees today were holding elections to choose their office-bearers. – January 28, 2015.

Gaji Mejar Zaidi dikembalikan TUDM

Gaji Mejar Zaidi dikembalikan TUDM

DAP demands special audit as 1MDB seeks third loan-repayment delay

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua says 1MDB is holding Malaysian banks hostage by seeking a third extension for its overdue RM2 billion loan. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, January 28, 2015.Putrajaya must conduct a special audit of 1Malaysia Development Bhd's (1MDB) finances after the strategic investor reportedly requested for a third extension to repay a local RM2 billion loan, throwing a spotlight on its finances, says a DAP lawmaker.Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said 1MDB was "holding Malaysian banks hostage by seeking a third extension for its overdue RM2 billion loan", citing a Bloomberg report yesterday saying “1MDB is planning to seek another one-month extension" on its RM2 billion loan “to give it more time to sell a stake in its energy unit"."This news is shocking as 1MDB has already missed two repayment deadlines for a RM2 billion debt in November and December 2014. Even this RM2 billion loan itself is part of a rescheduled and restructured debt it couldn’t pay in November 2013," he said in a media statement released in Kuala Lumpur today. He said the loan repayment extension raised a bigger question about the US$1.1 billion (RM3.9 billion) of funds which recently-appointed 1MDB chief executive officer Arul Kanda Kandasamy had announced as “redeemed" from its Cayman Islands investment on 13th January."Why couldn’t 1MDB have repaid the RM2 billion loan with the proceeds of the redemption first to ease the pressure on 1MDB?" he asked."The 1MDB debt crisis and its inability to resolve the meagre amount relative to its RM42 billion debt betrays the fact that the company is in serious financial trouble. Its assets are over-leveraged and illiquid while in all probability, 1MDB is also unable to exit its investments without incurring substantial losses," he added.Pua said that Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is the chairman of the Board of Advisers for 1MDB "can no longer hide behind the outlandish façade and rhetoric that 1MDB is financially strong when it has to reschedule its RM2 billion debt repayment thrice"."Instead, Datuk Seri Najib must instruct a special audit of 1MDB by the Auditor-General or a reputable independent auditor to uncover its financial shenanigans," the DAP lawmaker said.He pointed out that the Edge Financial Daily had reported that Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) had summoned key executives of 1MDB over the loan repayment and warned them of the consequences in failing to meet the loan repayment deadline this month."The act of even seeking another extension to the loan, which is only a fraction of 1MDB’s RM42 billion debt, is an affront to BNM. 1MDB is also holding its bankers, in this case Maybank Bhd and RHB Bank, hostage as the banks will have little choice but to grant 1MDB a further extension to the loan."It is completely unbecoming and irresponsible for 1MDB, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Ministry of Finance to bully its financiers. At the same time, 1MDB’s delinquency threatens both the credit-worthiness of the Malaysian government and the stability of the Malaysian banking system," Pua said. The Bloomberg report had said the state-owned investment company needed more time to repay the debt as it’s still in discussions with billionaire T. Ananda Krishnan, Malaysia’s second-richest person, citing people who asked not to be named as the process was private."Krishnan may excercise an option, granted when he sold energy assets to 1MDB in 2012, to buy part of the Edra Global Energy Bhd unit, the people said," according to the report.Pua said it was scandalous that the question of 1MDB’s ability to repay a RM2 billion debt now hinged entirely on whether Ananda Krishnan decides to exercise his options to acquire a stake in a 1MDB’s subsidiary."Firstly, 1MDB had overpaid Ananda Krishnan with an RM8.5 billion acquisition of his power assets in 2012. Now Ananda holds the trump card to potentially buy a strategic stake in 1MDB’s energy division at a fire-sale price because 1MDB has a RM2 billion sword hanging over its head."And the new chief executive officer, Arul Kanda, has the cheek to tell the media that 1MDB is a 'responsible borrower," he added. – January 28, 2015.

English-language daily The Star reported that the Central Bank cannot act on 1Malaysia Development Berhad's (1MDB) request seeking an extension to its RM2 billion loan. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, January 28, 2015.Bank Negara Malaysia cannot act on 1Malaysia Development Berhad's (1MDB) request seeking an extension to its RM2 billion loan, as that is a decision for the state investment firm's lenders, The Star reported today. The English-language daily reported central bank governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz as saying that only the company's lenders, consisting of commercial banks could decide on the matter.“In the case of any extension being provided, that is not by Bank Negara; it is from the lenders who are the commercial banks. They made those decisions," she was quoted saying.Concerns have mounted over the strategic investor's financial health following a report by financial news website Bloomberg that 1MDB planned to obtain a third extension to its RM2 billion loan by another month, to give it more time to sell a stake in its energy unit.Quoting sources, business daily The Edge Financial Daily on January 6 said the company had missed its December 31, 2014, deadline for settlement of the loan, and had received an extension up to January 30 to settle the outstanding payment. The RM2 billion was part of a RM5.5 billion debt taken through its subsidiary Powertek Investment Holdings Sdn Bhd in May 2014 to refinance a RM6.17 billion bridging loan taken in 2012 to partially finance the purchase of power assets.Maybank has 58.99% of the RM2 billion loan while RHB has 32.41%. The other lenders are Alliance Investment Bank Bhd (4.06%), Malaysia Building Society Bhd (3.24%) and Hwang DBS Investment Bhd (1.29%).Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua today urged Putrajaya to conduct a special audit on 1MDB's finances, saying the company was "holding Malaysian banks hostage" by seeking the one-month extension."This news is shocking as 1MDB has already missed two repayment deadlines for a RM2 billion debt in November and December 2014. Even this RM2 billion loan itself is part of a rescheduled and restructured debt it couldn’t pay in November 2013," he said in a statement this morning. But, Zeti said the central bank would not allow any "systemic" effect from any individual company to have an impact on the country's economy.“We will never comment on an individual entity, but we have arrangements to deal with it so that no individual entity will have a systemic implication on the overall financial system of our economy," she was quoted as saying by The Star. But, she refused to comment on 1MDB's RM3.9 billion funds from the Cayman Islands, which the company had said it was bringing back.“We do not comment on individuals," she was further quoted as saying.PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli said Bank Negara must prove that 1MDB funds in the Cayman Islands have been repatriated by disclosing the local bank holding the funds and whether the firm has enough to pay off its RM2 billion debt.He said Bank Negara had authority under the Anti-Money Laundering Act to disclose these matters. – January 28, 2015.

Lawyer Eric Paulsen (right) talking to media with his clients, Karuna Nithi's mother Katijah Bebee and family members. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Nazir Sufari, January 28, 2015.A coroner today ruled that policemen and inmates were responsible for the death of an unemployed man while he was detained at the Tampin district police headquarters in Negri Sembilan two years ago.Coroner Datuk Jagjit Singh said the cause of death of P.Karuna Nithi was caused by 49 multiple injuries by blunt objects including physical assault, abuse and unlawful acts by persons unknown, inclusive of police officers and other detainees where Karuna Nithi was held.Jagjit, who is a Sessions Court judge in Seremban, said in his verdict that there was failure or omission to provide the necessary medical care and attention required by Karuna Nithi."There was also failure of the police officers to stop other detainees from abusing Karuna Nithi in the police lock-up."This is the second verdict this month where police have been found responsible for the death of detainees in police custody. On January 16, coroner Ahmad Bache held police responsible for the death of lorry driver P.Chandran through their omission to provide him with timely medical assistance.Chandran had been detained at the Dang Wangi police station in Kuala Lumpur on September 6, 2012 and was held for four days before his untimely death.Jagjit said having gone through all the evidence, he was satisfied that the cause of Karuna Nithi's death was due to a combination of unlawful acts and omissions by person or persons unknown."The deceased was a healthy adult with no life threatening diseases when he entered the lock-up but ended up dead three days later with 49 external injuries," he said.He said a custodial death with that number of injuries should have "rung alarm bells from the word go".Jagjit said he rejected the evidence of forensic pathologist Dr Sharifah Safoorah Syed Alwee after extensive examination of the shortcomings in her testimony."She had erroneously found that the cause of death was due to 'fatty change in the liver'. But this cannot be so when the deceased had 49 external injuries," he said.Jagjit said closed circuit television footages from the police station clearly revealed Karuna Nithi was beaten by other inmates and the cops on duty were privy to what happened. He said some policemen had also contributed to the beating, harassment and bullying based on evidence adduced from the CCTV.Jagjit admitted that Karuna Nithi was a difficult detainee, adding "but that was no reason to ill-treat him"."He was repeatedly transferred from one cell to another because he was having hallucinations, raving and ranting," he added. The judge said a policeman also testified that Karuna Nithi’s welfare was neglected because it was thought that he was only pretending to be sick while in the lock-up.Karuna Nithi, 42, was found unconscious inside his cell by a policeman who went to check on him at about 6pm on June 1, 2013.He was rushed to the district hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.Police had detained him at about 5.30pm on May 28 after his wife lodged a report that he had assaulted her following a quarrel at their home at Rumah Rakyat Taman Muhibbah in Gemencheh.Karuna Nithi had also lodged a report earlier in the day admitting he had assaulted his wife because he could not take her verbal abuse. He was taken to the Tampin magistrate’s court the following morning where a four-day remand order was issued. On May 31, he was charged with causing hurt and was allowed a RM4,000 bail but was taken back to the lock-up because his family could not post the amount to secure his release.Police have maintained there was no physical abuse involved in his death although family members alleged there were fresh injuries on his body.Lawyer Eric Paulsen, who appeared for the family of Karuna Nithi, said this was yet another landmark verdict which the authorities must take serious notice of."The judge reiterated a Court of Appeal ruling last year that not a single person should die in a police lock-up. This is also a small victory for human rights," added Eric, who is also executive director for Lawyers for Liberty. He said Dr Sharifah was supposed to "speak for the dead person" but her findings were not justified.Co-counsel Dr Dheeraj Bhar, who was a medical doctor, said the rejection of Dr Sharifah's evidence had to do with her credibility as a professional."I hope the Malaysian Medical Council will look into this in light of what the judge  concluded," he added. – January 28, 2015

Mustafa Ali sedia jawab 'mulut celupar' Guan Eng

Mustafa Ali sedia jawab 'mulut celupar' Guan Eng

“Guan Eng jangan cakap bohonglah. Dia cakap separuh betul...

'Rakyat tentukan siapa bohong'

What the 'blizzard' really cost you

What the 'blizzard' really cost you

On the Spot Graphics, Jackson, printed up t-shirts mocking the blizzard that never was.(Photo: Courtesy On the Spot Graphics)The Northeast awoke Tuesday to a collective, "Wait, what?" as forecasts calling for heavy snow and perilous travel conditions proved wildly inaccurate."The Blizzard of 2015" failed to live up to all the foreboding theme music. Instead of feet of snow, residents locked down in a state of emergency, got mere inches. In frost-bitten places like South Dakota and Minnesota, they have a term for the weather we wound up with Tuesday: Partly cloudy. Perhaps the only thing "historic" about the storm, at least in New Jersey, were the extraordinary apologies that chastened meteorologists issued afterward.Clearly, mistakes were made. Now, somebody has to pay for it.That "somebody" would be you.For all its unrealized potential, the storm could still pack an economic wallop. The forecasters may have gotten that part right, at least.Consider the unnecessary overtime for road crews and other public employees. The lost wages and tax revenue from stores and others businesses that shut down early Monday and kept employees home Tuesday, in anticipation of something far more ... dramatic. The vacations, business trips and job interviews disrupted by the pre-emptive cancellation of thousands of airline flights across the Northeast. The extra aggravation caused Monday by those two words that every working parent of school-age children dreads: early dismissal. All the overkill adds up, in ways that may be impossible to tease out precisely.Preparing for the worstMichael Drewniak, a spokesman for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, said the state had little choice but to react to the forecasts the way it did."It's premature, I think, to assess costs. Regardless, it is the state's primary responsibility to protect the public in weather events like these, and the manpower and resources must be put in place to do the job," he said in an email. "Of course, like everyone else we rely on the forecasters' predictions, which were for a severe, even historic storm. Those predictions held until late last night, unfortunately."Local officials, too, felt their hands were tied. The city of Long Branch hired private contractors, had employees work overtime, and made sure it had an extra 500 pounds of salt on hand, expecting a bonafide blizzard."It's going to cost us big time with all our advance preparations, but what are you going to do?" said Fred Migliaccio, the city's public works director.Whatever "big time" means, you can multiply it by several hundred, considering all the other towns and counties that did the same thing. While Ocean County Administrator Carl W. Block said it was too soon to estimate the amount of money the storm and its hype had cost taxpayers, he expected to have a preliminary report ready for the Board of Chosen Freeholders' meeting Wednesday afternoon."There are a lot of county employees who heeded the dire predictions and took (Tuesday) off, so there's lost productivity," Block said.Still, he added, had the forecast correctly called for several inches of snow, the number of workers and equipment involved would have been about the same."We would have been salting the county roads and plowing," Block said. "We would have invested the same amount of time and money in getting the plows ready, on all the mechanics, all the precautions we've taken."Added Block: "If there had been three feet of snow on the ground this morning, we would have been plowing for the next two days and that's where the financial impact would have been felt the most.""We were ready for something big," Sea Bright Mayor Dina Long said of the preparations in her town. "Hopefully, we don't get complacent next time."Businesses impactedHeeding forecasters' dire warnings, some businesses planned to close Tuesday long before the storm ever reached the state.United Airlines, which accounts for the bulk of flights in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport, announced on Monday it was halting operations in the Northeast region on Tuesday.Banks and credit unions across the state shut down early on Monday, and many remained closed Tuesday, even though the forecast didn't pan out. On Monday, Wells Fargo workers were stacking sandbags to protect flood-prone branches in Ocean City, Seaside Park and Monmouth Beach. The bank announced Monday that all 305 of its branches would be closed Tuesday. The busy Northeast corridor was in line for a winter wallop that was predicted to bring anywhere from a few inches to a couple of feet of snow from northern New Jersey to Maine. Snowfall is heavy but less than predicted in many places. (Jan. 27) APWith his car still snowbound early Tuesday, Russell Capo, 66, walked six blocks from his Point Pleasant home to make a deposit at OceanFirst Bank so he could pay his electric bill on time. When he arrived, he found that the Bridge Avenue branch was closed."I would hope that they would be as accurate as possible for the working man and the general public, because our lives have to continue, even in a storm. There are things we still have to do," Capo said of the errant forecast.Other businesses that made plans to close Tuesday, including Best Buy in Eatontown, wound up calling employees in, in hopes of making the best of a bad day."If they're uncomfortable about (driving), we don't force them," store manager John Schneider said.At the Orchard Park sledding hill in Wall Tuesday, some parents who stayed home because of the forecast said they probably could have gone to work without much difficulty, but no one was complaining."You have to err on the side of caution," said Michele Spang, 50, of Spring Lake Heights, a specialist at the Apple store at Freehold Raceway Mall. The store closed early Monday ahead of the storm and it remained closed Tuesday, even though the mall itself had a delayed opening at noon."People make a big deal about being off, and they're all over social media (about the forecast being wrong) but it doesn't matter," Spang said. "It's a great day to be off and enjoy your friends and family."Rich and Nadine Demczyszyn, who own a printing business in Jackson, On the Spot Graphics, said they reluctantly took the day off, too, since many of their clients in northern New Jersey and Long Island had closed for the day."We're not a huge company," said Rich Demczyszyn, of Jackson. "It hurts."The couple may recoup at least some of their losses through sales of a storm-related T-shirt they began selling online Tuesday."I survived the Blizzard of 2015" it reads, tongue firmly in cheek.Winners and losersDavid A. Robinson, the New Jersey state climatologist and a Rutgers geography professor, said, as with any storm, there are bound to be winners and losers. The former group, he added, would include the supermarkets and hardware stores that were overrun with shoppers prior to the storm."Some people have benefited from this, others haven't, but overall, when you stop the economy, clearly there's an impact," he said. Some of the economic costs, he added, can be mitigated by the fact that so many people today are able to do their work from home."I mean, Rutgers is closed today, but I've done nothing but sit in front of my computer (working) since 7 o'clock this morning," he said. "You're the 12th person I've spoken to, and there's more waiting."Virtually all those calls, of course, were from reporters wanting to know what went wrong with the forecast."I knew when I woke up today that it was going to be a day of 'splaining," he said. "There's a lot of 'splaining to do."Contributing: Susanne Cervenka, Erik Larsen, Amanda Oglesby, Dan Radel and Russ Zimmer, Asbury Park (N.J.) Parents killed selves, kids fearing apocalypse

Parents killed selves, kids fearing apocalypse

FILE - In this Oct. 2, 2014 file photo, flowers and photos are on display during a vigil for the Strack family at Pioneer Park in Provo, Utah. Police say five members of the Utah family found dead last fall died from methadone and other drugs, and interviews with people who knew them revealed the parents worried about a "pending apocalypse." Springville Police Chief J. Scott Finlayson said Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, authorities have concluded their investigation into the September deaths of Benjamin and Kristi Strack and three of their children, ages 11, 12 and 14. (AP Photo/The Daily Herald, Grant Hindsley, File) MANDATORY CREDIT(Photo: Grant Hindsley)SPRINGVILLE, Utah (AP) — A Utah couple and their three children who were found dead in their home last fall overdosed on drugs after the parents told friends and family they were worried about the apocalypse, authorities said Tuesday.Police also found old letters written by the mother to a Utah inmate serving time for killing family members in the name of God, slayings chronicled in the 2003 Jon Krakauer book Under the Banner of Heaven.Benjamin and Kristi Strack and three of their four children — ages 11, 12 and 14 — were found dead in September in a locked bedroom of their Springville home. All five were tucked into covers in and around their parents' bed.At a news conference Tuesday, Springville Police Chief J. Scott Finlayson said investigators have concluded their probe and determined the family members died from drug toxicity from either methadone, heroin or a combination of drugs, including those found in cold medicine.Authorities determined the parents committed suicide. The younger two children's deaths were ruled homicides, although Finlayson said there were no signs of a struggle. The manner of death for the 14-year-old, Benson Strack, was undetermined.Police said Benson wrote a goodbye letter, leaving some of his belongings to his best friend. The only other recent writing the family left behind was a notebook containing handwritten to-do lists about feeding the pets and other chores.Finlayson said interviews with people who knew the Stracks indicated the parents were worried about evil in the world and wanted to escape from "impending doom.""There seemed to be a concern about a pending apocalypse that the parents bought into," Finlayson said. "While some friends though that suicide may have been, or could have been, included in their plans, others believed they were going to move somewhere and live off the grid."During their investigation, police found years-old letters between Kristi Strack and Dan Lafferty, who is serving a life sentence after being convicted of committing a double-murder with his brother Ron.Under the Banner of Heaven is about members of an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, told through the true story of the Laffertys' crimes. The two killed their brother's wife and 15-month old daughter.Ron Lafferty is on death row after his conviction in the July 1984 slayings of his sister-in-law, Brenda Lafferty, and her baby in American Fork. He claimed to have had a religious revelation sanctioning the slayings because of the victim's resistance to his beliefs in polygamy.Investigators said Kristi Strack was deeply interested in the case and struck up a friendship with Dan Lafferty."It was almost like he talked to her like one of his children," Lt. David Caron said. She and her husband both became close to him, and he had directed his remains to go to them after his death. They hadn't talked to him since 2008 and investigators do not believe the couple's beliefs came from Dan Lafferty, police Cpl. Greg Turnbow said."He felt really sad they had committed suicide," Caron said.Benjamin Strack's brother Jacob said the final report from investigators wasn't surprising to relatives still mourning the family's deaths.Looking back, the connection to Dan Lafferty was a troubling sign about the couple's mental state, he said. The Stracks' older son and the children's grandmother found the bodies Sept. 27, according to search warrants. The older son was Kristi Strack's child from a previous marriage.Police found cups with liquid inside next to each of the bodies and a child's sand bucket behind a door with traces of the same combination of methadone and cold medication that was found in their systems.Police believe that Benjamin Strack died last because he was the only member of the family who wasn't underneath bed covers. In a recording of the 911 call released Tuesday, family friend Maureen Ledbetter tells the dispatcher about the deaths as grandmother Valerie Sudweeks screams in the background. The methadone used in the deaths was prescribed to Kristi Strack, police said.Court records show Benjamin and Kristi Strack had a history of legal and financial problems and had gone through court-ordered drug treatment several years ago. Investigators said they weren't aware of any contact with state child services workers.Benjamin Strack's boss, bricklaying company owner Alex Short, has said it appeared those troubles were behind them.Springville is a city of about 30,000 near Provo, about 45 miles south of Salt Lake City.Copyright 2015 The Associated Press. Swiss group pushing for probe into Sarawak company linked to Taib

The front page of the Malaysia Airlines website as seen on a mobile device, as at 10am this morning. – January 26, 2015.Hackers allegedly linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) militant group today broke into the website of Malaysia Airlines."Plane not found," said a message on the front page of the national airline's website at www.malaysiaairlines.com this morning, signed off as "Cyber Caliphate", as a rap song played in the background. The website title was also changed to "Isis will prevail".It is understood that only those using Telekom Malaysia's Unifi service are taken to the hacked page.Hackers claiming to be Isis supporters have in the past brought down Twitter and YouTube accounts. Some experts believe today's attack on the MAS website appears to be a DNS redirect rather than an all out hack.DNS, or domain name system, translates a domain name to the Internet Protocol (IP) address.MAS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.According to an AFP report, the hackers claimed to be from the "Lizard Squad", a group known for previous denial-of-service attacks. The Lizard Squad is a group of hackers that has caused havoc in the online world before, taking credit for attacks that took down the Sony PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live network last month. The Islamic State, an extremist Sunni Muslim group, has seized large swathes of Syria and Iraq, where it has declared an Islamic "caliphate".It has drawn thousands of fighters from across the globe to its anti-Western cause, and shocked the world with its video-taped executions of journalists and other foreigners it has captured, the most recent being a Japanese security contractor it claimed Sunday to have beheaded.A second Japanese captive being held by the militants has also been threatened with execution. The Isis group, which uses social media in recruiting and spreading its message, is believed to harbour ambitions of launching a cyber-war against the West.It is unclear why MAS was targeted but the hacking group said on its Twitter feed that it was "Going to dump some loot found on malaysiaairlines.com servers soon."AFP added that MAS had released a statement confirming its Internet domain name had been compromised, re-directing users."At this stage, Malaysia Airlines' web servers are intact," it said, but added it could take nearly 24 hours to fully resolve the issue, which it had reported to Malaysian authorities."Malaysia Airlines assures customers and clients that its website was not hacked and this temporary glitch does not affect their bookings and that user data remains secured," it said.Concern has been rising in the country after scores of Malaysians were lured to the Isis cause in the Middle East.Malaysian authorities last week said they had detained 120 people suspected of having Isis sympathies or planning to travel to Syria. – January 26, 2015.

Penang upbeat about ballooning collaborations with Tourism Ministry

One of 15 balloons to be featured at the Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta on 21 and 22 February. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 26, 2015.Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today said the state government was upbeat on the prospect of cooperating with the Tourism and Culture Ministry to help boost the arrival of both local and international tourists into the country.Lim said he was optimistic that the collaboration would be fruitful and would benefit the state and national economies, following feedback on sagging tourist arrivals in several states in Malaysia at the end of last year.“We hope to have more events together with Tourism Malaysia," he said, adding that Penang’s tourism figures for last year, which have yet to be tabulated and announced, were not significantly hampered.Lim’s comments came in the wake of visible support from Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz for tourism initiatives in Penang.Nazri had last year openly supported the state’s plan to ban foreign cooks at hawker stalls, to house the Colonial Penang Museum and to organise the George Town Festival. Nazri and Lim also attended together the celebrations to mark the 228th anniversary of Fort Cornwallis on August 7 last year.Lim added that Penang had not been affected by lower arrivals from China although there was concern of reduced interest among China nationals visiting Malaysia following the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 on March 8 last year. The flight vanished while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with a 12-person crew and 227 passengers on board, including 152 citizens of China.“We have to work harder to get the tourists," Lim said, adding that the state would work with the ministry to lay particular focus on getting more Asean and domestic visitors.Lim was speaking at a press conference to announce the Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta to be held on February 21 and 22 at the Padang Polo on the island. Also present were Tourism Malaysia state deputy director Haryanty Abu Bakar and programme partner AKA Balloon Sdn Bhd finance manager Maimoon Mohd. The RM650,000 event is sponsored by the state and held in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia, a division of the Tourism Ministry. The ministry will cooperate with the Penang Island Municipal Council and state agency Penang Global Tourism in holding the event which will feature a total of 15 balloons.

Lim said three of the balloons would remain tethered and open for rides to the public at RM25 per person, while a “cold inflation balloon" would allow individuals to pose for photographs inside the balloon at RM5 per person.“We hope to make the balloon fiesta an annual event," Lim said, noting that the only other place to feature a balloon festival was Putrajaya. He added that a series of festivals, including the George Town Festival in August, would be vital to strengthening the tourism appeal of Penang. – January 26, 2015.

Putrajaya denies outlawing caning of children in amended act – Bernama

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim reportedly said caning would be an offence under the new new Child Act. The ministry says not all forms of caning are outlawed. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, January 26, 2015.A provision proposed by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry under the new Child Act is not meant to outlaw all forms of caning of children. On the other hand, the ministry clarified that what was proposed in the new act was for a more detailed provision on actions which cause physical or mental injuries to children including caning."The ministry is studying and scrutinising the proposal so that the legislation will cover all acts against children causing physical and emotional injuries deemed as criminal offences which could be punishable with heftier imprisonment or fines."Besides, the ministry is also considering alternative punishment such as community service or counseling or parenting courses," said the statement issued by the ministry's corporate communications unit. The ministry also clarified that the action of refining the law was in line with the previous proposal to abolish Section 91(1)(g) of the Child Act 2001 where the court is allowed to conduct caning on children found guilty.Several newpapers have reported Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim as saying that caning children would be a criminal offence if the new legislation to replace the Child Act 2001 was passed by Parliament.Following the report, several parties asked for clarification and called the ministry to review the proposal. In this regard, the ministry also explained that the proposal to abolish caning at the court level was in line with the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child(CRC)."At the same time, Section 91(1)(g) of the Child Act 2001 allows a male child to be sentenced to caning not more than 10 strokes if found guilty of criminal offences. On this, caning in court is different from caning in the house or in school."Caning in court is carried out according to procedures set by law. However, based on pyschological development in line with CRC, the ministry proposes to abolish the punishment," the statement said. – Bernama, January 26, 2015.

"Sebab wakil penduduk Encik Salleh..." jawab wartawan.

Fed judge issues 14-day stay in Ala. same-sex marriages

Granade ruled in favor of the couple, who sued to challenge Alabama’s refusal to recognize their 2008 marriage performed in California.(Photo: Rob Carr, AP)MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A federal judge on Sunday put a two-week hold on her decision that overturned Alabama's gay marriage ban, but said same-sex couples should not be kept in lengthy legal limbo.U.S. District Judge Callie V. S. Granade refused the Alabama attorney general's request to put her ruling on hold until the U.S. Supreme Court takes up the decision of gay marriage later this year. But she did issue a 14-day stay to give the state time to appeal her decision to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.Granade said it was inappropriate, in her view, to put the decision on lengthy hold."As long as a stay is in place, same-sex couples and their families remain in a state of limbo with respect to adoption, child care and custody, medical decisions, employment and health benefits, future tax implications, inheritance and many other rights associated with marriage," she wrote. Some hoping to get married swiftly expressed disappointment over the two-week hold."It's aggravating. The judge ruled and everybody got so excited and now, this," said Tori Sisson, who had camped outside the Montgomery courthouse Sunday night with Shante Wolfe in hopes of securing a marriage license first thing Monday. The stay will expire Feb. 9 unless the court extends it.Granade had ruled Friday that Alabama's statutory and constitutional bans on gay marriage were in violation of the U.S. Constitution. That ruling was the latest in a string of victories for same-sex marriage advocates around the Deep South after judges struck down bans in Mississippi, Arkansas, the Carolinas and Florida. The judge's order reverberated in a state considered one of the Bible Belt's most socially conservative.Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange called the 14-day stay a step in the right direction."While I would have preferred a longer stay to allow the matter to be settled by the U.S. Supreme Court's anticipated ruling in June, the 14-day stay allows more time for my office to prepare our stay request to the 11th Circuit Court while also affording the public time to resolve the confusion over the impact of the recent ruling," Strange said.Granade's ruling striking down the marriage ban came out of a case filed by Cari Searcy and McKeand of Mobile. The couple said the ban prevented Alabama from recognizing their 2008 California marriage and Searcy as a parent to their son. McKeand gave birth to the child in 2005, but the court's rejected Searcy's adoption petition because the couple was not legally married.Grande said before the stay expires that she would also issue a separate order addressing a key issue of dispute in the wake of her initial ruling: Must state probate judges begin issuing marriage licenses to gay couples? The Alabama Probate Judges' Association maintains that Friday's ruling applies only to the parties in that case, and that it doesn't require judges to issue marriage licenses to other same-sex couples. One probate judge and president of the association, Greg Norris of Monroe County, said probate judges have a duty to issue licenses in accordance with Alabama law, which means they can't issue them to same-sex couples. In a teleconference Sunday afternoon, Norris said, "The Alabama law does not allow that and we are duty-bound by it."Al Agricola, attorney for the group, said the case only concerned Searcy and McKeand. Agricola said Strange was enjoined from enforcing the ban, but that probate judges were not mentioned in the lawsuit."The attorney general in Alabama has no role to play in the issuance of marriage licenses, so there is no party to Judge Granade's case who has any role to play with regard to the issuance of marriage licenses in Alabama and the plaintiffs do not represent any class of person who might be similarly situated to them," Agricola said.Norris said the association has asked all 67 probate judges in the state to stay decisions on issuing marriage license to same-sex couples until the U.S. Supreme Court rules on the issue, likely in June."Unless the federal judge issues a stay, then MGM Probate Court will issue a license to ANY couple that wants to be married," Reed wrote on Twitter.Norris said he was not sure how many probate judges in the state would issue marriage certificates to same-sex couples starting Monday. Norris also said no judge would be penalized for acting against the association's advice."Each probate judge and their county is their own jurisdiction," Norris said. "What we are basing the Alabama Probate Judge's Association's advice on is legal counsel and our stance is not to issue them."Agricola said the association would be filing a claim in Granade's court that supports Stranges's motion to stay Granade's decision until the U.S. Supreme Court rules.Contributing: The Associated PressNortheast braces for potentially epic winter stormJan 25, 2015

Indonesia will not make public initial AirAsia crash report

Part of the fuselage of crashed AirAsia Flight QZ8501 is seen inside a storage facility at Kumai port in Pangkalan Bun on Monday. The airliner lost contact with air traffic control in bad weather on December 28, 2014, less than halfway into a two-hour flight from the city of Surabaya to Singapore. – Reuters pic, January 21, 2015.Indonesia will not release to the public a 30-day preliminary report detailing its investigation into last month's crash of AirAsia Flight 8501 that killed 162 people, a senior transport safety official said today. The Airbus A320-200 vanished from radar screens on December 28, less than halfway into a two-hour flight from Indonesia's second-biggest city of Surabaya to Singapore. There were no survivors.Investigators are analysing data from the aircraft's two "black box" flight recorders to determine exactly why it crashed.Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan yesterday told a parliamentary hearing that, according to radar data, the plane had climbed faster than normal in its final minutes, after which it stalled.Investigators have not found any evidence so far that terrorism played a part in the disaster.Investigators are expected to submit a preliminary report to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) early next week. Under ICAO regulations, the preliminary report must be filed within 30 days of the date of the accident."One month after the accident we will just make a preliminary report. No comment and no analysis," Tatang Kurniadi, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Committee, told reporters."This will not be exposed to the public. This is for the consumption of those countries that are involved." – Reuters, January 21, 2015.

PAS Youth plans Charlie Hebdo protest

PAS Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat wants France to engage with its Muslims in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo killings. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Afif Abd Halim, January 21, 2015.PAS Youth will hold a protest to condemn both the murder of Charlie Hebdo cartoonists as well as the weekly's move to continue publishing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. Its chief, Suhaizan Kaiat, said they wanted the French government to take "follow-up action" to address the outcry among Muslims."We don't agree that the way to solve the problem is by killing, …(but) we do not want Prophet Muhammad to be demeaned to the extent that it will incite more outrage on this issue," Suhaizan said after handing over a memorandum to the French embassy in Kuala Lumpur today. The memorandum calls for the French government to hold more religious dialogues in France to promote better understanding of Islam and Muslim culture. It also wants the France to state its opposition to the actions by Charlie Hebdo to continue drawing caricatures of the Prophet. The memorandum was received today by the embassy's deputy head of mission, Florence Mayol-Dupont and its premier secretary Damien Syed.Suhaizan said PAS Youth would discuss the planned protest with other participating non-governmental organizations so that the message that they did not support the killings was clear."We do not want to be seen as if we accept the violence done by some people in France."Although Charlie Hebdo was not a government-owned newspaper, Suhaizan said French authorities have failed to resolve the unrest."We asked them to make a firm statement to condemn the newspaper but they said they have limitations because of their country's emphasis on freedom," he said.PAS Youth's International bureau head, Dr Raja Ahmad Iskandar said they were disappointed with the French government's argument that the weekly's right to offend is part of human rights.Suhaizan added that embassy representatives had informed them that Charlie Hebdo was a left-wing newspaper with only a circulation of 20,000 per month, compared to other publications that reached 100,000 per week. – January 21, 2015.

I didn’t get my facts wrong on Ibrahim Ali, reporter tells libel hearing

Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali is suing theSun and two of its former editors over an article punlished by the English daily in 2010. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 22, 2015.A reporter with the Mingguan mStar newspaper testified today that Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali had told her in an interview that during his audience with the Sultan of Selangor, the ruler had discussed at length allegations about the Malay rights group's image as a chauvinist outfit.Taking the witness stand in the defamation suit by Ibrahim against theSun Media Corp and its two former editors Chong Cheng Hai and Terence Fernandez, the Mingguan mStar reporter Nurul Ain Mohd Hussain refuted Ibrahim’s testimony on Wednesday that she had got her facts wrong about the interview.Nurul Ain told the Shah Alam High Court that she only made minor changes in her article published on March 28, 2010 and was not “getting her facts wrong" as alleged by Ibrahim. She clarified that the only changes she made in her article were to take out certain suffixes or expressions such as “lah", “Iyelah" or other colloquial words in Malay. When asked by defence counsel Himahlini Ramalingam how she went about interviewing Ibrahim and the procedure following the interview, Nurul Ain said: “My editor asked me to look into it after theSun’s article came out.“I made an appointment (with Ibrahim), brought my tape recorder and (went with) my photographer.“I wrote his answers word by word and it was truthful and accurate. I did not edit anything further, other than taking out dialects and suffixes.“The interview was held three years ago and I could not find a copy of the original transcription since after writing it, I never thought about it until yesterday afternoon when I was asked to become a witness," Nurul Ain said. She told the court that she has lost the recording and the original transcription.Yesterday, Ibrahim had told the court that Nurul Ain had misreported him, claiming that she made a mistake and that the Sultan of Selangor had never brought up theSun’s accusations against him.“So many reporters called me for interviews… I can’t recall everything. Sometimes during exclusives you speak a lot, you say a lot of things but when it’s published, the reporters will shorten the sentences, they might take it out of context or spin it," he had said.“When the reporter brought up that question, it was like the reporter put words into my mouth. I was answering her question but it ended up looking as if the Sultan brought up the topic (about him and Perkasa’s alleged chauvinism) and I discussed the issue with the Sultan," Ibrahim had said.Yesterday, he had also said that the interview with The Star was quite lengthy and detailed. However, Nurul Ain said today that the interview only lasted around 30 minutes.Earlier, the Sultan’s private secretary Datuk Munir Bani also took to the stand and acknowledged that the Sultan had instructed him to prepare the press statement explaining the ruler’s decision not to attend Perkasa’s first AGM.“All the letters and press statements released by my office were under the instructions of the Sultan and with the blessings of the Sultan. Before I release anything, the Sultan will view it first before giving his approval," he explained.Fernandez, who is now the editor of special reports and investigations at The Edge Media Group, also took to the witness stand.Questioned by the plaintiff’s lawyer Harmy Yusoff regarding his sources, Fernandez maintained that they were accurate and said they were confidential.Ibrahim is represented by Harmy Yusoff, while appearing for the defendants are Datuk Nitin Nadkarni, Himahlini Ramalingam and G.Meerasree.The presiding judge is Justice Gunalan Muniandy. Submissions will be heard on February 27. – The Edge Financial Daily, January 22, 2015.

New Saudi king seeks unity among Arab, Islamic nations

New Saudi king seeks unity among Arab, Islamic nations

An image grab taken from Saudi state TV on January 23, 2015 shows Saudi mourners praying over the body of their late King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz.(Photo: AFP/Getty Images)As Saudis mourned the death of King Abdullah and world leaders paid their respects, newly enthroned King Salman pledged Friday to continue the policies of his predecessors while calling for unity among Arab and Islamic nations at a time of regional unrest."The Arab and the Islamic nations are in dire need of solidarity and cohesion," the king said in his first speech after succeeding his half-brother, King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz.Abdullah, who was hospitalized with pneumonia in December, died early Friday at the age of 90.Salman's call for unity was a clear response to the unrest fomented by the rise of the militant Islamic State in large parts of Syria and Iraq. But Salman, the 79-year-old head of a key U.S. ally, pledged no abrupt policy changes."We will continue adhering to the correct policies which Saudi Arabia has followed since its establishment," he said. The one-time defense minister had increasingly taken on the duties of the king over the past year as Abdullah became more incapacitated. Abdullah, the force behind OPEC and a U.S. ally in the fight against al-Qaeda, officially ascended to the throne in 2005, but had been de-facto ruler for years before that.Last SlideNext SlideAbdullah was buried Friday afternoon following a funeral at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah mosque in the capital, Riyadh. Muslim dignitaries from around the world began arriving in Riyadh for the funeral, under heavy guard.State television aired images of the prayer ahead of his burial, which showed the king's body shrouded in a simple beige cloth in line with Islamic tradition.President Obama said in a statement it was "with deep respect that I express my personal condolences and the sympathies of the American people" to the king's family and all Saudis. He noted that the king's life "spanned from before the birth of modern Saudi Arabia through its emergence as a critical force within the global economy and a leader among Arab and Islamic nations."He praised Abdullah for his "bold steps in advancing the Arab Peace Initiative," which Obama said "will outlive him as an enduring contribution to the search for peace in the region." Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has died. He was a powerful U.S. ally who joined Washington's fight against al-Qaida. He's also credited with attempting to modernize the ultraconservative Muslim kingdom with incremental but significant reforms. (Jan. 2 APObama said he always valued Abdullah's perspective "and appreciated our genuine and warm friendship. As a leader, he was always candid and had the courage of his convictions."Vice President Joe Biden will lead a presidential delegation to Saudi Arabia to offer condolences.Internally, Salman also moved quickly to demonstrate unity within the royal family that has controlled the country for six decades, naming Abdullah's half-brother Moqren, 69, as crown prince. He also charted a new path by naming his nephew, Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, as deputy crown prince, making him second-in-line to the throne. Mohammed is the first grandson of Saudi Arabia's founder, King Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, to be named as a future heir.Salman's own health has been a question of concern. He suffered at least one stroke that has left him with limited movement on his left arm.Salman also appointed his son, Prince Mohammed, as defense minister. The prince, among Salman's most favored sons, is in his 30s and was head of his father's royal court when Salman was crown prince. It was a symbolic recognition of the thinning -- and aging -- ranks of the sons of King Abdul-Aziz, who provided the line of succession since his death in 1953.Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States had "lost a friend" with Abdullah's death. He commended the king for investing in Saudi Arabia's people, infrastructure and economic development."Even as he battled age and illness, he held on to his sense of determination," Kerry said in a statement. "He was so proud of the Kingdom's journey, a brave partner in fighting violent extremism who proved just as important as a proponent of peace."Former President George H. W. Bush said he was "deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend and partner King Abdullah."He called the monarch "a wise and reliable ally, helping our nations build on a strategic relationship and enduring friendship.""Of course, following the invasion of Kuwait, I will never forget the way Saudi Arabia and the United States stood together against a common foe — marking a moment of unparalleled cooperation between two great nations."Some Islamic militants and their supporters, however, celebrated Abdullah's death on social media Friday, many of them describing him as a "servant" of the Americans who conspired with the West to kill Muslims.A man who identifies himself as an Islamic State supporter who uses the name Abu Azzam al-Najdi criticized the late king on Twitter, saying: "He sent his warplanes to kill Muslims in (Syria). He imprisoned Muslim men and women and wherever there was a war against jihadis, he was the first."Abdullah was known for having tried to modernize the ultraconservative Muslim kingdom, including small but important steps to create more opportunities for women. Obama noted that his "vision" was "dedicated to the education of his people and to greater engagement with the world."He was no advocate for democracy, however. He and his fellow Sunni Muslim monarchs saw popular uprisings as threats to their lock on power, and they fought to keep the "Arab Spring" from reaching the Gulf. His biggest focus was limiting the influence of Saudi Arabia's main Middle East rival, mainly Shiite Iran. Abdullah also maneuvered to keep the radical Islamic State from posing a direct threat to the House of Saud.As the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques — his official title — he often pushed back against Washington, earning him a reputation of being less pro-American than his predecessors. Saudi experts said it was undeserved."His reputation as anti-American is absolutely untrue,'' the late James Akins, a former U.S. ambassador to Riyadh, once said. The king's death leaves Queen Elizabeth II as the world's oldest-living monarch. Next month she hits her 63rd anniversary on the throne, and on Sept. 10 she will pass Queen Victoria as the longest-reigning British monarch. Judge says Ariz. 'dreamers' can keep driver's licenses

"Dreamers" celebrated an appeals court decision ordering Arizona to grant them driver's licenses.(Photo: Nick Oza/The Republic)PHOENIX — It's been a month since a federal judge issued a temporary injunction that forced Arizona to start allowing young immigrants known as "dreamers" to apply for driver's licenses, ending former Gov. Jan Brewer's 2 1/2-year-old ban.Thursday, U.S. District Judge David Campbell made the injunction permanent. In doing so, Campbell dealt another blow to the state's argument that dreamers who receive work permits through President Barack Obama's deferred-action program are not legally entitled to get licences. In issuing the permanent injunction, Campbell sided with dreamers who sued the state to overturn Brewer's executive order denying driver's licenses to any dreamers who receive work permits through Obama's program. The state began allowing dreamers with work permits to apply for driver's licenses on Dec. 22."This means they can keep their licenses," said Araceli Martinez-Olguin, a senior attorney for the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project.More than 20,000 dreamers in Arizona have received work permits through Obama's program, which defers deportation for immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as minors.Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union and several other groups that sued on behalf of the dreamers had argued that Arizona's license ban should be permanently blocked because it discriminates against dreamers granted work permits through Obama's program, while granting driver's licenses to other non-citizens who receive similar work permits.Campbell agreed. The lawyers had also argued that Brewer's ban had "irreparably harmed" dreamers by limiting their access to jobs and forcing them to drive illegally.Last SlideNext SlideLawyers for the state, however, had argued that Obama's program was created outside of immigration laws passed by Congress and therefore immigrants who receive work permits through the program do not have legal presence in the U.S. As a result, they are not eligible to apply for driver's licenses under state law, which requires that applicants prove they have legal presence."It's heartening that the judge saw through" that argument, Martinez-Olguin said. The legal battle may not yet be over. Before leaving office earlier this month, Brewer had vowed to try and take the case to the Supreme Court.Gov. Doug Ducey, who took office Jan. 5, has not indicated whether he will continue the legal battle, which has cost Arizona more than $1.5 million. His spokesman, Daniel Scarpinato, said Ducey was reviewing the ruling.
